A central concern of his research is to promote the school participation of people with impairments and to counteract absenteeism or drop-out. Prof. Dr. Ricking follows an empirical approach and uses social and educational science formats to contribute to the improvement of educational practice. In doing so, he prefers to use forms of applied research that are highly relevant to practice and help to reduce the so-called "theory-practice gap".

His research focuses on the conception, implementation, evaluation, and dissemination of solutions for the realization of high-quality professional development and effective instruction for all learners.
